New assisted living community opens at Creekside Living in Grundy Center
Creekside Living now offers an assisted living community on its Grundy Center campus, which also includes two nursing home cottages, a therapy center and villas for active living.
“We saw a need for this among people who don’t require a nursing home but could still use some help to maintain their independence,” explains administrator Scott Kramer. “Assisted living is really a social model that can accommodate individual needs and make it possible for everyone to enjoy life to the fullest.”
Legacy Cottage offers private accommodations for sixteen assisted living residents. Each receives daily homecooked meals, transportation to medical appointments, a full calendar of therapeutic social activities, and an array of care services needed for independence, from medication management to mobility help to bathing and grooming.
Legacy Cottage follows the household model of care, rather than the traditional medical model. Instead of creating a schedule that revolves around staff assignments, the household model is resident-centered. Each day unfolds based on a resident’s choices. The goal is to maintain privacy, dignity and purpose.
The environment is designed to support the care model; each cottage is built like a family home, with a living room, den, open kitchen and dining room, plus cozy nooks at the end of each short hallway. Large windows and outdoor accessibility provide ideal surroundings.
“The cottages look over a creek bed and rolling farmland, so it’s peaceful and serene while being close to all the town amenities,” says Kramer. “Our cottage design takes full advantage of the setting with its spacious front porch and large courtyard. Those are popular spots for residents to socialize, garden, create art or spend time with visitors.”
Kramer says assisted living residents and families can trust the high quality of care that is a hallmark of Creekside. The nursing homes at Creekside received a deficiency-free inspection survey this spring, a rare occurrence among Iowa’s nursing homes.
